I have found new toys in Google Maps and Google Earth. Let us make use of them and bring our ancestors back to life by seeing the world as they saw it! If the map is slow in loading click on the 'larger map' link - it seems to load a lot faster!

When seeking our heritage we must be prepared to accept the bad with the good.
The waters that I have stirred contain a lot of debris that may better have been left undisturbed.
Soldiers, sailors, boot-makers, carpenters and bricklayers, royal servants and slave traders. Bridge builders and marine engineers.
Wife-beaters, family deserters and loving families.
From child deaths to centenarians, deaths in child-bearing to great-grandmothers.
A family is indeed a microcosm of humanity.
It has been a sad reminder to me of the hardships and trauma endured by our grand-parents and their parents and grand-parents when you analyse the number of child-deaths that occurred during the 19th and early 20th century. We have a lot to be thankful for in today's, albeit consumerist, society.
